Kava (Piper methysticum).
BACKGROUND: Kava is a plant indigenous to the Pacific Rim and the Hawaiian Islands whose root and rhizome are used to prepare a non-fermented beverage with relaxant effects that is used for social and recreational purposes. Kava roots are chewed or ground into a pulp and added to cold water, and the resulting brew—reported to mimic the effects of an alcoholic beverage—has been used as a ceremon...

Description and Constituents Piper methysticum (kava kava) is a perennial plant native to the Pacific Island region, and has been used ceremonially for thousands of years. Traditionally, a beverage is prepared, then drunk before the evening meal. Indigenous methods of mastication of the kava root have given way to grinding or pounding the plant substance, which is then mixed with water or cocon...
متن کاملProteomic profile of Piper tuberculatum (Piperaceae).
Piper tuberculatum (Piperaceae) is a species that accumulates especially amides as secondary metabolites and several biological activities was previously reported. In this article, we report a proteomic study of P. tuberculatum. Bidimensional electrophoresis (2D SDS-PAGE) and mass spectrometry (ESI-Q-TOF) were used in this study. Over a hundred spots and various peptides were identified in this...
متن کاملAnticancer activities of constituents of kava (Piper methysticum)
Crude extracts of kava (Piper methysticum G. Forster, Piperaceae) showed good activity against ovarian tumour and leukaemia cancer cell lines. Bioassay-guided isolation resulted in the isolation of six known kava lactones and two flavokavains. The structure of the compounds were elucidated by spectroscopic techniques and by comparison with data in the literature.
متن کاملChemical constituents of Piper betle Linn. (Piperaceae) roots.
Column chromatography of the alcoholic extract of Piper betle roots furnished aristololactam A-II and a new phenyl propene, characterized as 4-allyl resorcinol, while the petroleum-ether extract yielded a diketosteroid, viz. stigmast-4-en-3,6-dione. All these compounds were characterized by spectroscopic means. Isolation of these compounds from this source is being reported here for the first t...
